The Challenge:

Establishing a web presence that accomplishes the following goals

  • Centralize access to information regarding Unix systems
  • provide tools to assist administrators
  • allow for improved quality of support services
  • offer customers a sense of conformity to standards especially security standards through education/knowledge systems

The site must scale to manage the growing departments with individual specific needs. Access to private information must be secured.

The Solution:

The result was a simple but well designed internal portal solution implementing key technologies to provide context sensitive searches, links to key Nortel organizations, content based on the latest information on the vast inventory of Unix hardware and software installations from every conceivable Unix vendor to the telecommunications market.

HP 9000, K-class. Netscape Web server, SUN Microsystems Ultra 10, Pervasive SQL, Pervasive Tango 4.

The Benefits:

  • Over 200 Unix workstations and Server installations distributed across multiple building sites within the corporate headquarter campus located in Brampton were collected into an online database
  • With an integrated series of CGI applications a number of manual processes were automated. For instance inventory audits were automated. As a result improving asset management
  • Zero learning curve for admins across the organization to cross support new development groups working on enterprise java applications
  • Effective maintenance coordintation with web development groups working on java projects
